Shelves: How to Fill Empty Space without Looking Cluttered

Shelves can be the perfect decorative touch to add to your home, or they may end up being a place to collect clutter over time. For some, this may be hard to avoid, but that doesn’t add the best look to the interior design of your home. Here are some helpful tips on ways you could fill the empty space of your shelves in a way it doesn’t look cluttered…

There is a difference between using shelving for storage and using it to highlight some pieces/bring different elements to the interior of your space. With this in mind, you want to keep it simple and cohesive. Be sure to consider these tips when decorating your shelves:

  • Keep Some Empty Space- You want to make sure there is some empty space between items and it isn’t completely full throughout every shelf. Especially if the shelves are on top of each other and the one above or below it is full. This adds room preventing the cluttered look/feel.

  • Vary Shapes- Having a shelf just full of books can seem overcrowded. Try breaking it up by adding some type of vase or decorative piece. Be sure to have the colors and patterns cohesive, however. If you mix hues that don’t pair whether it’s in books or pieces it won’t make the shelf look as nice.

Are you looking for maximum storage with your shelving without it looking hectic? Try some of these tips to have a convenient maximum storage solution.

  • Color Coordinate Storage- It’s likely you are going to use bins/baskets on shelving storage if you are trying to maximize it. Get colors and pieces that fit the color scheme you are going for. Also, add space between the storage whether it is empty space or a place to add a decoration. This will create a lighter look.

Put the Large/Heavy Storage on the Bottom Shelves- Trying to reach up to the top shelf to get a large heavy bin may not be the easiest task. Use the top shelves for lighter items that aren’t used often to avoid constantly reaching for the top shelf. Also, by having large/heavy storage on the bottom shelf it not only is the safest and most convenient location, but it can make the shelves look better when the bottom ones are more full. You do, however, want to have different shapes and sizes on each row to prevent it from looking like shelves at a store.

Trying to create empty space or fill it can be difficult to do. There are a variety of different techniques and methods that can be used to build a better space. Here at VNTG Place, we want to make sure your home's interior is everything you envision. Don’t wait for your dream home, create it!
