Do's and Don'ts of Styling with Pillows

Decorating with throw pillows can elevate your space and tie rooms together to make you feel more at home. However, this can take a negative turn if you don’t consider these tips when incorporating pillows into your home's styling.

Do’s

There are many factors that should be considered when picking out the perfect pillows for your space. It is especially important to consider all the other elements like patterns, textures, styles, etc from the furniture and items that are already in your space. Here are some reasons why these considerations are important:

-Size: It is important to consider the size of the pillows before you purchase them. A way to figure out what size your pillows should be is to consider them in relation to the shape and size of the furniture they will be on. If the couch is bigger with more seat cushion room then it would likely be better to have a bigger pillow, but with a smaller couch, a big pillow would cause there to not be room to sit comfortably.

-Texture: Adding textured pillows to furniture is a good way to add another element to simple pieces of furniture. People often purchase minimalistic, neutral furniture. Adding textured or even patterned pillows will help to add contrast within your space, as well as other elements you incorporate.

-Color: Another way to boost your interior is by adding pops of color within your pillows. A tip for figuring out what colors to incorporate is to look around at furniture pieces and artwork that is already in your space. Use colors from those pieces and it will help tie the space together.

Don’ts

You may think it’s hard to go wrong with adding pillows, but it’s actually easy to do. Anywhere from the amount, quality, or patterns of pillows can cause your space to feel cluttered or unorganized if not done right. Here are some tips to help avoid these issues:

-Amount of Pillows: Going overboard with the number of pillows you add to your furniture will not be a pleasant experience. It will cause people to constantly have to move them, throw them on the floor, or just have to sit on a piece of furniture with no space. Having so many to the point you’re moving them to the floor will make your home look cluttered, or just leaving them on the couch will cause yourself as well as guest discomfort. Try to be more minimal rather than overbearing when it comes to the number of pillows you use.

-Contrasting Patterns: Having pattern on pattern or multiple different bold colors on top of each other is almost never the way to go. It can be overwhelming to look at and cause your space to feel hectic. Try to only add bold colors or textures through your pillow choice if your furniture is a plain neutral color/pattern and vice versa.

Even the small change of adding the right throw pillows can make a drastic difference. Be sure to keep in mind these tips next time you are looking for the perfect throw pillows to add to your home.
